This mechanistic model details feeding and growth in the early-stage of Atlantic bluefin tuna, with the aim of predicting the optimal birthing time. Fiksen and Reglero (2021) propose that food limitation significantly influences reproductive phenology. To test this hypothesis that food limitation significantly influences reproductive phenology, they develop an individual-based model considering factors such as visual acuity ontogeny, seasonal light cycles, gut dynamics, and prey field variations. The larval data come from field sampling of ABFT larvae during spring and summer from 2001 to 2017 in the Balearic Sea, Western Mediterranean. Monthly abundances of Cladocera, collected during 1994-2003 through double oblique hauls from 0-70 m depth (using a Bongo net with a 20 cm mouth diameter and mesh size of 250 mm), are utilized as prey for bluefin tuna larvae.
